Tree pruning services

Tree pruning is the removal of living or dead parts of the tree, think twigs, branches, parts of the trunk and even the tree’s roots. It’s the most common tree work job that tree surgeons do, and there are lots of reasons why we do it.

Trees grow to the boundaries of their environment but sometimes they need a helping hand. The natural cycle of growth and dieback, storm damage, disease and pests are just some of the issues that make pruning a necessity. Human intervention also plays a part, such as the demolition or construction of properties which can result in serious problems in the future.

At Ali Wales Tree Solutions we carry out all our tree surgery work in line with the British Standard BS3998: 2010 for Tree Work. Our tree pruning work is planned and delivered to reduce the chances of structural failure and any risk to people and property. We of course will do everything in our power to prolong the tree’s life.  The tree work will be laid out within a risk assessment and method statement.

Dead Wooding

Dead wooding involves the removal of dead, dying or diseased wood on a tree, this includes broken branches and stubs that may have been left from previous tree surgery operations. We cut back the dead wood to a healthy branch junction.

Crown Lifting

Crown lifting is the removal of the lowest branches and sometimes the preparation for lower branches for removal at a later stage. It’s a tree pruning technique that can increase the amount of light into a garden and improve the overall health of a tree. For older, mature trees crown lifting may be phased over a number of years to prevent decay on the wound.

Thinning

Tree branch thinning involves the removal of secondary branches from within the crown of the tree. The goal is to reduce the density of the tree as a whole.

Crown Reduction

Crown reduction differs from thinning in that it aims to to reduce the crown’s overall size or to reshape an asymmetrical crown. We’ll ensure there’s a strong framework of healthy branches that can produce a dense leaf cover in the following growing season.

Coppicing

Coppicing is a tree management technique that takes a tree all the way down to stump level, allowing vigorous regrowth of the tree.

Pollarding

Pollarding involved the removal of all the tree growth back to the main stem producing a large volume of vigorous shoots. Pollarding is usually performed when the tree is established and then is maintained on a cyclical basis, dependent upon the site management objectives.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do trees sometimes need to be felled?2020-11-10T16:52:00+00:00

Tree felling is the action of cutting down a tree to improve the safety an area or to prevent disease from spreading. Removing a tree from a public space or near a home is often a last resort when remedial work will not be enough to ensure safety for people, property or plants.

When is the best time to prune a tree?2020-11-10T16:51:40+00:00

We generally advise against pruning trees in spring, this is when the sap rises up and the leaves begin to come out. During autumn, trees draw back in the nutrients they need to survive the winter. Pruning in autumn can cause stress, resulting in disease or even death of the tree.
